High Alert Issued in Sialkot and Wazirabad as Rising Water Flow Expected in Chenab River
LAHORE: Authorities have issued a high alert in Sialkot, Wazirabad, and adjoining areas after India reportedly opened the gates of the Salal Dam, raising concerns over a significant increase in water flow in the Chenab River.
According to the Punjab Irrigation Department, the release of water from the dam is expected to increase the river’s water level, prompting authorities to activate precautionary measures in anticipation of possible flooding in low-lying areas.
The department said emergency preparedness measures have been initiated in Sialkot and Wazirabad, while district administrations and rescue agencies have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure readiness to respond to any flood-related emergency.
Assistant Commissioner Wazirabad Jawad Pirzada stated that the next 48 hours are critical, as a major flood wave is expected to reach the Chenab River during this period. He added that the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has also warned of the possibility of significant flooding.
Officials said the district administration is continuously monitoring the situation and further strengthening preventive and emergency response measures to safeguard residents in vulnerable areas. Citizens living near the river have been urged to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities if the situation worsens.
