Heat and Humidity Increase Risk of Food Poisoning, Health Experts Warn

Extreme heat and humid weather significantly increase the risk of stomach-related illnesses and food poisoning, which in severe cases can even become life-threatening, health experts have warned.

According to nutrition specialists, rising temperatures create ideal conditions for the rapid growth of bacteria in food items. Perishable foods such as chutneys, yogurt, cut fruits, meat, and street food are especially vulnerable to contamination during hot weather.

Experts note that food can sometimes appear and smell normal even when it has already gone bad, leading people to consume contaminated items unknowingly and fall ill.

Street food, in particular, is considered a major health risk in summer, as it is often left uncovered for long periods and lacks proper refrigeration. In some cases, the same cooking oil is reused repeatedly under high temperatures, further increasing health hazards.

Common symptoms of food poisoning include nausea, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain and cramps, diarrhea, mild fever, headache, and general weakness.

To reduce the risk of illness, experts recommend consuming freshly cooked homemade food, avoiding pre-cut fruits sold in markets, and properly refrigerating dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt. Drinking boiled or filtered water is also advised, while avoiding open beverages and unhygienic ice.

They further advise that cooked food should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours, and any food with an unusual smell should be discarded immediately without tasting it.

Health experts emphasize that careful food handling during summer is essential for preventing dangerous infections and maintaining good health.
