Frequent Short Vacations More Effective Than Long Annual Leave, Study Finds

A recent study has revealed that employees may benefit more from taking regular short breaks throughout the year rather than using all their annual leave at once.

According to a research paper published in 2025 by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, taking short vacations every two months can significantly improve mental well-being, overall health, and workplace performance.

The study found that while extended annual vacations can provide temporary relief from stress and mental fatigue, their positive effects often begin to fade within a few weeks of returning to work.

Researchers noted that shorter but more frequent vacations are more effective at keeping stress levels under control over the long term. This approach can also enhance employees’ productivity, concentration, and overall job performance.

The findings suggest that maintaining a healthy balance between work and rest through regular breaks may be a more effective strategy for preserving mental health and preventing burnout among working professionals.
