Loralai Medical College Seats Increased from 50 to 100 with PM&DC Approval
QUETTA: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has approved an increase in the annual seats of Loralai Medical College from 50 to 100, according to a spokesperson for the Balochistan Health Department.
The spokesperson described the development as a historic achievement for the promotion of medical education in Balochistan, helping address the shortage of doctors and providing greater opportunities for local students to pursue medical education.
PM&DC inspectors conducted a detailed inspection of Loralai Medical College on August 17 and 18, reviewing teaching facilities, faculty, the affiliated teaching hospital, infrastructure and other required arrangements. Following fulfillment of the necessary requirements, the college was approved for 100 seats.
The Health Department spokesperson said the achievement was the result of the vision of Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, the leadership of Provincial Health Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar and the continued supervision and efforts of Health Secretary Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Panezai.
The spokesperson said the provincial government was focusing on expanding medical education, improving the quality and capacity of medical colleges, and providing young people with access to quality medical education within their own regions.
Earlier, a high-level delegation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) visited Loralai and Turbat. Following the visit, the relevant teaching hospitals in Loralai and Turbat were designated as CPSP postgraduate training sites, creating new opportunities for specialized medical training and postgraduate education for doctors in Balochistan.
According to the spokesperson, coordinated measures are also underway under the supervision of the provincial health minister and health secretary to bring medical educational institutions in line with the standards required by PM&DC and CPSP.
The spokesperson said inspections of Jhalawan Medical College in Khuzdar and Makran Medical College in Turbat are also expected to take place this month. He expressed hope that, after fulfillment of the required standards, further positive announcements would soon be made regarding these institutions.
The Balochistan government remains committed to increasing medical college seats, expanding postgraduate training opportunities and strengthening teaching hospitals, the spokesperson said.
These measures will not only help address the shortage of doctors in the province but also contribute to ensuring quality healthcare facilities for people living in remote areas.
