IMF Proposes Increase in Benazir Income Support Programme Payments, Suggests Raising Installment to Rs20,000

Islamabad: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reportedly proposed an increase in the financial assistance provided under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) as part of discussions related to Pakistan’s federal budget 2026-27.

According to sources, the IMF has suggested raising the quarterly stipend under BISP by Rs5,500, increasing the current amount from Rs14,500 to Rs20,000. The proposal is part of ongoing negotiations between the IMF mission and Pakistani authorities regarding the country’s social protection framework.

Sources said that detailed briefings are being given to the IMF mission on all operational aspects of the Benazir Income Support Programme, including the “Kafalat” initiative and registered beneficiary data.

During the discussions, officials also presented information on household registration processes, quarterly disbursements, and financial requirements for the upcoming fiscal year. The IMF has reportedly recommended an increase in the quarterly payments under the Kafalat programme for the next financial year.

The IMF delegation is currently holding multiple meetings, including one focused on BISP and three separate sessions with Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials. Around four meetings with the IMF mission have been scheduled in total over the coming days as talks continue on fiscal reforms and social protection spending.
