Punjab Announces Major Relief for Motorcyclists as Heavy Traffic Fines Reduced

Lahore (Khabar Desk) — The Punjab government has abolished the 2025 ordinance imposing heavy traffic fines and strict penalties, providing significant relief to motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, and the general public.
According to details, Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider signed the “Provincial Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill 2026,” officially replacing the previous ordinance.
Under the new amendments, imprisonment for traffic violations has been removed, while fine amounts have been reduced by up to 90 percent.
The revised penalties include a major reduction in fines for driving without a license, which has been lowered from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,000. Similarly, the previous punishment of six months imprisonment and a Rs 50,000 fine for one-way traffic violations has been abolished, with offenders now facing only a Rs 5,000 fine.
The amendments also remove imprisonment and the Rs 50,000 penalty for underage driving, replacing it with a Rs 10,000 fine. Driving without a fitness certificate will now result in a Rs 5,000 fine instead of Rs 50,000.
In addition, penalties for overloading and carrying passengers on vehicle rooftops have been reduced from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,000.
Governor Sardar Saleem Haider said that the public is already facing severe inflation, and imposing excessive fines under traffic laws was not appropriate in such circumstances. He added that the objective of the amendments is to uphold the law while reducing the financial burden on poor citizens, especially daily wage drivers.
The new traffic rules and reduced penalties have come into immediate effect across Punjab.
