US Warns Iran Against Hormuz Strait Fees; Russia Offers Mediation

Washington: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that any attempt by Iran to impose fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz would be unacceptable.
In an interview with Fox News, Rubio said the United States would not tolerate efforts to “hold international waterways hostage.” He stressed that requiring permission or payment from Iran to use the vital shipping route contradicts the principle of free navigation.
“The Strait of Hormuz cannot be considered open if ships must seek Iran’s approval or pay fees,” Rubio said, adding that Tehran does not have the authority to decide which vessels can pass through the strategic corridor.
Meanwhile, Russia has offered to mediate between Washington and Tehran amid rising tensions. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow is ready to facilitate dialogue if all parties agree.
Peskov emphasized that Russia supports diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and reducing tensions in the region. He warned that any escalation into conflict could severely impact not only Iran but also countries surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the global economy.
He added that continued diplomatic engagement remains essential to maintaining regional stability and preventing further escalation.
