Ghazala Hashmi Makes History as Virginia’s First Muslim Woman Elected Lieutenant Governor

New York:In a landmark victory, **Democratic leader Ghazala Hashmi** has been elected as **Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor**, becoming the first Muslim woman to win a statewide office in the United States.

Hashmi defeated Republican candidate **John Reid**, who made history as the first openly gay candidate to run for statewide office in Virginia. As Lieutenant Governor, she will **preside over the Virginia Senate** and has the authority to cast **decisive tie-breaking votes**, a critical role given the narrow 20-19 Democratic majority in the chamber.

Previously, in 2019, Hashmi won a **Virginia State Senate seat**, defeating a Republican and becoming the first Muslim and Indian-American woman elected to the state legislature. She initially entered politics motivated by opposition to the Trump administration’s **Muslim Ban** policy.

During her recent campaign, Hashmi emphasized **civil rights, educational reforms, women’s empowerment, and protection of minorities**, maintaining a strong focus on practical solutions despite criticism and attacks from her opponents.

She secured the Democratic nomination in June by defeating five primary challengers with **28% of the vote** and later ran a coordinated campaign alongside fellow Democratic candidates, **Governor hopeful Abigail Spanberger** and **Attorney General candidate Jay Jones**.

Hashmi’s victory, alongside New York’s election of **Zahraan Mamdani as the city’s first Muslim mayor**, marks **a historic day for Muslim representation in American politics**.
