Government Considers New Multi-Tariff System to Benefit Industrial Electricity Consumers

Islamabad: The federal government has initiated steps to introduce a new optional “Multi-Tariff System” aimed at facilitating industrial electricity consumers and promoting efficient energy use, according to the Power Division.

Under this system, industrial consumers will have access to variable electricity rates based on the time of usage, with charges determined according to their peak demand. The primary objective is to encourage industries to consume cheaper electricity during off-peak hours when overall demand is low.

A Power Division spokesperson stated that reducing peak demand will ease pressure on the national grid, while the availability of affordable electricity during off-peak times is expected to boost industrial production and enhance the competitiveness of Pakistani products in international markets. The new tariff system is also designed to promote energy conservation.

The Power Division plans to consult all stakeholders, including industrial consumers and the Chamber of Commerce, on the proposed tariff. The first online consultation conference is scheduled for March 26. Officials believe that these reforms in the power sector will play a key role in Pakistan’s long-term economic growth and help resolve energy challenges faced by the industrial sector.
