Pashtunkhwa National Awami Party Protests Renaming of Quetta Roads, Vows Legal Action

Quetta: The Pashtunkhwa National Awami Party has strongly condemned the provincial government’s recent decision to assign unrelated names to major roads, divisions, and districts in Quetta and other areas of the province. The party described the move as an attempt to erase Quetta’s historical identity and disregard the rights of the Pashtun community.
In an official press release, the party expressed concern that while the provincial rulers claim to promote brotherhood and peaceful coexistence among communities, their actions continuously undermine the historical, cultural, and political significance of Pashtun heritage. The party emphasized that previous administrative decisions regarding new divisions and districts had already caused unrest, but the latest renaming of Quetta’s roads, intersections, and development projects, including the CPEC road, after unrelated figures or artificial references, is highly inappropriate and biased.
The release highlighted that the CPEC road project was approved in previous governments, with all funding and administrative procedures completed at that time. Earlier rulers had maintained a balanced approach by not attributing the project to any individual or close associate, whereas the current provincial government’s actions reflect arrogance and disregard for local sentiment.
The Pashtunkhwa National Awami Party demanded an immediate review of the decision and called for assigning names that respect Quetta’s history, geography, and the sentiments of both Pashtun and Baloch communities. If the government fails to reconsider, the party announced it will approach the High Court and file a formal constitutional petition to protect the rights of Quetta’s residents.
