Low-Fat Vegan Diet May Reduce Insulin Needs in Type 1 Diabetes Patients: Study

Islamabad: A new study has found that adopting a low-fat vegan diet may significantly reduce daily insulin requirements in people with Type 1 diabetes. Researchers reported that participants following the plant-based diet reduced their insulin use by nearly 30 percent.

Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose (a form of sugar) from the bloodstream into muscle and liver cells, where it is used for energy. People with Type 1 diabetes must take insulin injections because their bodies do not produce sufficient amounts of the hormone.

In the study, researchers compared the effects of a low-fat vegan diet with a portion-controlled diet. The results showed that individuals on the vegan diet experienced a 28 percent reduction in their total daily insulin dose—an average decrease of 12.1 units—while no significant changes were observed in the control group.

Experts note that dietary choices can play an important role in diabetes management. However, patients are advised to consult their healthcare providers before making major dietary changes to ensure proper monitoring and insulin adjustment.
