Karachi-Sukkur Passenger Train Project Announced with Rs6 Billion Investment

KARACHI: In a major development for Pakistan Railways, the federal government has decided to launch a passenger train service from Karachi to Sukkur after upgrading the railway track with an investment of Rs6 billion.

The decision was taken during a meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, attended by senior provincial and federal officials.

Murad Ali Shah praised the efforts of the federal railway ministry, stating that the revival of railways’ ownership is visible after a long time. He assured full cooperation from the Sindh government, including joint investments with Pakistan Railways.

Railways officials informed the meeting that the Karachi-to-Sukkur route covers 480 kilometers. Minister Hanif Abbasi said all tracks would be newly laid and the passenger train from Karachi to Rohri would offer air-conditioned coaches with modern facilities.

The meeting also reviewed the **Karachi Circular Railway (KCR)** project, with the Sindh CM stressing its urgent need. Both sides agreed to form a joint team of experts to finalize the plan, with potential involvement of donor agencies and the private sector.

Additionally, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) will take over cleaning services at Karachi Cantt and City stations, along with washing lines. The meeting also resolved to remove encroachments along railway lands and stations.

Abbasi assured that Pakistan Railways is moving toward outsourcing facilities to improve services nationwide.
