Government Confirms Former PM Imran Khan Received Medical Examination at PIMS Hospital

Islamabad: The government has confirmed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan was transferred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital last week for a medical examination.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar clarified on Thursday that ophthalmologists initially examined Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. Following this, he was taken to PIMS Hospital on Saturday night, where specialists conducted a 20-minute medical check-up before he was returned to the jail.
Minister Tarar emphasized that the former prime minister is in good health and that all prisoners have access to medical care. “Whenever a doctor recommends a hospital referral, we ensure the prisoner receives appropriate treatment,” he added.
Earlier, PTI had claimed on Tuesday that Imran Khan was suffering from a severe eye infection that could lead to permanent vision damage if not treated promptly. According to the party, the former PM developed a blockage in the central retinal vein of his right eye, posing a serious risk to his eyesight.
PTI criticized the authorities, alleging that jail officials insisted on treating him inside the prison, while doctors reportedly stated that such treatment was not feasible within jail limits. The party had also appealed to the court for permission for a medical examination, but the request has been pending since August 2025.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s sisters denied PTI’s claims, stating they had not been informed and had not seen him in the past three months. Alima Khan said she had not met her brother during this period and was unaware of how the news reached the media. Azma Khan mentioned she met him on December 2 but he did not discuss his eye condition. Noreen Khan added that if the news were true, it should have been shared with the family.
According to a report by Dawn newspaper citing a senior PIMS doctor, Imran Khan was brought to the hospital under tight security late Saturday night for a complete examination, which continued until the early hours of Sunday before he was returned to Adiala Jail.
PTI leadership expressed deep concern over the situation, describing it as “mishandling,” and demanded immediate family access to the former prime minister.
Imran Khan has been serving a sentence at Adiala Jail since August 2023 in a £190 million corruption case and is also facing cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act related to the May 2023 protests.
Yesterday, Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, and Secretary General Salman Akram Raja held a press conference urging that no obstacles be placed in the way of Imran Khan’s treatment and care.
