Federal Minister of Law Azam Nazeer Tarar Asserts No Institution Can Rewrite Constitution

Islamabad: Federal Minister of Law Azam Nazeer Tarar has declared that no institution will be permitted to rewrite the constitution. His statement came during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, chaired by Chairman Rana Iradat Sharif. The meeting focused on amendments to the Elections Act 2017.
Minister Tarar supported the bill, emphasizing that only courts have the authority to interpret laws. He clarified that an elected representative must join a political party within three days of running as an independent candidate. Once a representative joins a party, their affiliation cannot be changed.
Tarar further asserted that joining a political party is a one-time, irrevocable decision.
In contrast, PTI-supported members opposed the election amendment bill. Shahida Akhtar Ali criticized the bill, stating that while they have always worked for the supremacy of the constitution and laws, it would have been better if legislation addressed issues with IPPs (Independent Power Producers). She lamented that such bills appear whenever contentious situations arise, leaving the Election Commission in a difficult position. Ali urged the government to present a detailed amendment and address the implications.
