27th Constitutional Amendment Likely to Be Passed in National Assembly Today

Islamabad:The National Assembly of Pakistan is set to reconvene today, with a strong possibility that the **27th Constitutional Amendment Bill** will be passed during the session.
According to *Dunya News*, debate on the proposed amendment has been ongoing since yesterday. The House is expected to approve the bill **clause by clause** during today’s proceedings. The amendment was formally presented in the lower house on Tuesday.
The government requires **224 votes** for the amendment to pass and currently enjoys the backing of **237 members**, making approval almost certain.
Former Prime Minister and PML-N supremo **Mian Nawaz Sharif** is also expected to attend today’s session and cast his vote in favor of the bill.
Sources indicate that the government is keen to establish the **Federal Constitutional Court** as soon as possible. Once the amendment receives **the President’s assent**, practical steps toward forming the new court will begin. Reports suggest that if the National Assembly passes the bill today, **judges of the Federal Constitutional Court may be sworn in as early as tomorrow (Thursday)**, officially marking its establishment.
Under the 27th Amendment, the **President of Pakistan** will appoint judges of the Federal Constitutional Court on the **Prime Minister’s advice**. The Senate has already approved the proposed legislation.
Meanwhile, the **opposition parties** have submitted their own constitutional amendments to the National Assembly Secretariat, which will be presented separately. However, the government has decided to reject the opposition’s proposals with a **two-thirds majority** and remains confident of smoothly passing its own amendment.
Yesterday’s Assembly session descended into chaos amid loud protests, but **Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar** defended the amendment, stating that the **suo motu powers** had become “a monster” in the past. He asserted that the new reforms would make the judicial process **more transparent and effective** by clearly defining judicial limits.
**Defence Minister Khawaja Asif** added that the amendment was not aimed at any political party but intended to **strengthen the justice system**.
However, **PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali** criticized the proposal, calling it a **violation of the democratic structure**, while **JUI-F’s Shahida Akhtar Ali** argued that several provisions had been included **without public consultation**.
