Power Tariff May Rise by 82 Paisas Per Unit as CPPA Seeks Fuel Cost Adjustment

ISLAMABAD:Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face an increase of 82 paisas per unit after a request for a fuel price adjustment was submitted to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

According to NEPRA, the petition relates to the fuel cost adjustment for May and has been filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA).

The regulator announced that a public hearing on the request will be held on June 30, after which a decision will be made regarding the proposed increase.

Sources said that if the adjustment is approved, electricity consumers could bear an additional financial burden of approximately Rs12 billion.

In its submission, the CPPA stated that the average fuel cost of electricity generation during May stood at Rs9.25 per unit.

Fuel cost adjustments are regularly made to reflect fluctuations in the prices of fuels used for electricity generation, and any approved increase is typically passed on to consumers through their monthly electricity bills.

The final decision on the proposed tariff adjustment will be taken by NEPRA following the hearing and review of the agency’s request.
