Merger of Levies into Police in Balochistan a Historic Step Towards Reform, Says Mir Zahoor Baloch

*Quetta (Daily Qudrat)* — **Mir Zahoor Baloch**, Provincial Minister for Planning and Development of the **Pakistan Peoples Party**, has described the government’s decision to merge the **Levies Force into the provincial police** as a **historic reform aimed at strengthening governance and law enforcement** in Balochistan.
In a statement on the social media platform **X**, he said the core issue for the people of Balochistan is not the separate existence of the Levies and police but the **long-standing absence of effective governance**. He emphasized that in light of the province’s current situation and the requirements of modern policing, a **unified chain of command** has become essential.
Mir Zahoor Baloch noted that the **140-year-old tribal governance and policing system**, established during the British Raj under Robert Sandeman, has now lost its relevance. He said the provincial government has taken **significant reform measures** to strengthen the rule of law and improve governance.
He explained that merging the Levies into the police and converting **B areas into A areas** is a historic step toward establishing **law and order, transparency, and institutional stability** across the province. The reform will create a **uniform law enforcement system**, strengthen **accountability**, implement a **modern policing model**, and ensure **efficient use of resources**.
Mir Zahoor Baloch added that while some groups benefiting from the old tribal system may wish to **roll back these reforms for personal interests**, such efforts should be **discouraged rather than encouraged**. He described the reforms as a **positive move toward peace, stability, and effective law enforcement** in Balochistan.
