Pakistani Farmers Take Legal Action Against German Companies Over 2022 Flood Losses

Farmers in Sindh, Pakistan, devastated by the catastrophic 2022 floods, have announced plans to sue German companies **RWE** (energy) and **Heidelberg** (cement) for damages. The farmers have sent formal legal notices demanding compensation of over €1 million, claiming these companies are major contributors to global pollution and climate change, which worsened the floods.

The 2022 floods submerged a third of Pakistan, killing more than 1,700 people, displacing over 33 million, and causing economic losses exceeding $30 billion, with Sindh being the hardest hit region. The German companies said they are reviewing the legal notices. Farmers argue that although they contributed little to the climate crisis, they are bearing its greatest cost while wealthy corporations profit.

This case highlights growing international demands for **climate accountability** from major polluters.
