Former Caretaker Minister Fawad Hasan Fawad Opposes Government’s Sugar Import Decision

ISLAMABAD: Former caretaker federal minister and close ally of PML-N president Nawaz Sharif, Fawad Hasan Fawad, has strongly opposed the government’s decision to import sugar amid soaring prices in the domestic market.

In recent days, the price of sugar has seen a sharp rise, with the commodity being sold for as high as 200 rupees or more in several cities. To address the sugar crisis, the government has decided to import 500,000 metric tons of sugar, and the formal tender for this import has already been issued.

In a statement on social media, Fawad Hasan Fawad criticized the government’s move and called for an immediate review of the decision to import sugar worth 30 million dollars. He argued that the primary consumers of sugar are not ordinary people but the food and beverages industry, which had previously been allowed to export sugar and is now also involved in the import process.

Fawad further stated that these same entities had made huge profits from the fluctuation in sugar prices and the export of sugar. He emphasized that the failure of the government to control prices could not justify the decision to import sugar.

Additionally, Fawad Hasan Fawad raised questions about the actions taken against those who had allowed the export of sugar, asking what action had been taken against them. He also inquired about the role of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in this entire matter.

His comments reflect growing concern over the sugar crisis and the need for greater accountability in handling such critical issues.
