Pakistan to Chair UN Security Council in July: Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad Discusses Agenda with UN Secretary-General

NEW YORK:Pakistan is set to assume the presidency of the **United Nations Security Council (UNSC)** in July 2025. In this regard, Pakistan’s **Permanent Representative** to the United Nations, **Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad**, met with **UN Secretary-General António Guterres** at the UN Headquarters in New York.
During the meeting, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar briefed the UN Secretary-General about the **proposed Work Programme** for the UNSC in July, detailing the Council’s agenda under Pakistan’s presidency. He emphasized that Pakistan would ensure the presidency is conducted in an **open, transparent, and consultative** manner.
Ambassador Iftikhar and Secretary-General Guterres engaged in a comprehensive discussion on several urgent global issues that will be on the UNSC agenda, including the **deteriorating situation in the Middle East**, ongoing developments in **Africa, Europe, Asia,** and **Latin America**, and the **role of UN peace missions** in advancing the objectives of the Security Council.
Ambassador Iftikhar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to upholding the **principles and objectives** of the **UN Charter** and promoting global peace and security through the peaceful resolution of conflicts. He highlighted the strong resolve among member states to address **complex global challenges** through **collective action**.
The meeting also saw a reiteration of Pakistan’s full support for the **Secretary-General’s efforts** in promoting **multilateral diplomacy** and **conflict prevention**, emphasizing the importance of joint efforts in tackling the various crises facing the world today.
