HRCP Calls for “Living Wage” for Pakistani Workers Amid Rising Cost of Living

The **Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP)** has emphasized the urgent need for a **living wage** for workers in the country, highlighting the severe financial struggles faced by millions. According to HRCP, many laborers are forced to make difficult decisions, such as choosing between feeding their families or paying utility bills, due to insufficient wages.

In a report titled **”From Survival to Dignity: The Case for a Living Wage”**, HRCP outlines that a **family of six** in Pakistan needs over **75,000 PKR** per month to meet basic necessities, including food, housing, utilities, healthcare, and education. However, millions of workers earn far less than this, making it nearly impossible to meet their family’s needs.

The report stresses the necessity of not just a **minimum wage**, but a **dignified living wage**, which is backed by **Article 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights**. This article affirms the right of every worker to **fair and adequate remuneration** that guarantees a life of dignity for themselves and their families.

HRCP urges the government to consider this principle when preparing the upcoming **federal budget** for the new fiscal year. The commission argues that **full-time workers** should have the right to live a life that includes **security, healthcare, and hope**.

As the government readies the budget, HRCP hopes to see a reflection of this vision in the wage policies, ensuring a better standard of living for laborers across Pakistan.
