Three Indian Fighter Jets Downed: Indian Officials Confirm Amid Rising Tensions with Pakistan

Islamabad/New Delhi:Indian security officials have confirmed that **three Indian Air Force fighter jets** were lost during the recent military escalation with Pakistan, following Pakistani claims that five Indian aircraft—including three advanced **Rafale jets**—were shot down in retaliation for cross-border aggression.
According to a senior Indian security official, who spoke to **American media on condition of anonymity**, the jets did crash, although the causes remain “unclear” at this stage. The official did not comment on whether the aircraft were brought down by enemy fire or mechanical failure.
Meanwhile, **eyewitnesses cited by an American magazine** reported that one of the jets crashed in **Indian Punjab**, while another went down in **Indian-administered Kashmir**. Forensic analysis of debris from one crash site suggests it may have been a **Rafale or Mirage** jet, though it remains unconfirmed whether the aircraft was hit by Pakistani fire.
Earlier, **Pakistani military spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry** announced in a press briefing that **Pakistan Air Force (PAF)** successfully downed **five Indian aircraft**, including three Rafales, a MiG-29, and an SU-30, in a swift counteroffensive. He said the PAF only targeted military sites and aircraft, avoiding civilian areas.
Adding to the credibility of Pakistan’s claims, a **French intelligence official confirmed to U.S. media** that at least one **Rafale fighter jet** operated by India was indeed destroyed, and France is investigating whether more were lost.
The Indian newspaper **The Hindu** also briefly published a report confirming the downing of three IAF aircraft by PAF, accompanied by images, but later removed the post, citing lack of official confirmation from the Indian Ministry of Defence.
This incident follows India’s **night-time airstrikes on civilian areas** in Pakistan-controlled regions, which Islamabad described as a “cowardly and unlawful act of aggression.” The strikes resulted in the deaths of **31 civilians**, including women and children, and wounded **over 50** others.
**Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif** and **Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan** spoke via phone, during which Erdoğan offered condolences and expressed Turkey’s support for Pakistan. He reiterated Turkey’s willingness to mediate and help de-escalate the regional tensions.
The situation remains volatile as both nations exchange strong rhetoric and military actions. The **Pakistan National Security Committee** has authorized the military to respond decisively to any further aggression.
