Malnutrition Among Children in Balochistan on the Rise, with 49.6% Affected

Quetta:The number of children suffering from malnutrition in Balochistan has seen a sharp increase, with official statistics indicating that one in every two children in the province faces nutritional deficiencies. According to a recent nutrition survey, children across all 36 districts of Balochistan are grappling with poor nutrition, with 49.6% of children affected by food insecurity.

Health experts have warned that malnutrition not only impedes a child’s physical growth but also weakens their immune system, making them vulnerable to a range of diseases. For malnourished children, measles can be particularly life-threatening, and their overall development, including height and weight, lags far behind their peers. Special medical protocols and interventions are required to address the needs of these children.

Balochistan has been under a nutrition emergency since 2018, yet the relevant department is still waiting for grants to combat food scarcity due to the non-release of funds. The lack of financial resources has made it difficult for the Directorate of Nutrition to effectively address the issue and provide essential support to the affected children.

Experts working in the field of nutrition in Balochistan cite several key factors contributing to the rise in malnutrition, including poverty, insufficient breastfeeding, floods, droughts, and widespread food shortages. They stress that these are the primary causes of the growing crisis.

Public circles are calling for the provincial government to move beyond mere announcements and implement concrete, actionable steps to tackle this critical issue. With a large number of children at risk, it is imperative that immediate and sustainable solutions be put in place to ensure the well-being and future of the next generation in Balochistan.
