“Love for Guns Is Dangerous”: Mahmood Khan Achakzai Urges Government to Reverse Emergency Decision in KP

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai has strongly criticised the proposed imposition of an emergency and Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, urging the government to reverse its decisions and resume dialogue to resolve political differences.

Speaking during a session of the National Assembly, Achakzai said, “The passion for guns is very dangerous. Do not complicate matters by playing with words.”

He said he was still willing to sit down with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the interest of the country and the Constitution. He suggested that two chairs be placed in the assembly so that he and the prime minister could sit face to face and work towards resolving the country’s problems.

Describing the emergency decision as entirely wrong, Achakzai urged the government to abandon the move and choose dialogue instead of confrontation.

Defending former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Sohail Afridi, the opposition leader said Afridi had not abused anyone and had only called on people to stand against injustice.

He maintained that the government still had time to reverse what he described as unconstitutional decisions.

Referring to the political legacy of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, Achakzai asked whether the government wanted to turn Imran Khan into another revered political figure like Bhutto.

Achakzai also offered to facilitate renewed negotiations with Imran Khan. He said the opposition would meet the PTI founder, assess his physical and mental condition and keep the details of the meeting confidential.

“We promise that we will meet Imran Khan and will not disclose anything to anyone,” he said, adding that efforts would be made to resume negotiations from the point where previous talks had stalled.

Calls for Probe into Alleged Corruption and Dual Nationality

Addressing economic and administrative issues, Achakzai alleged that corruption worth trillions of rupees was taking place in the country.

He further claimed that more than 23,000 civilian and military bureaucrats held dual nationality and called on the country’s relevant security institutions to investigate the matter.

The opposition leader also proposed that Federal Minister Khawaja Asif head a committee tasked with investigating the allegations.

Achakzai’s remarks came amid heightened political tensions over the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the opposition calling for political engagement and a reversal of the government’s proposed emergency measures.
