Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif Calls for Urgent Action on Climate Change and Assures Continued Support for Flood Victims in Gilgit-Baltistan

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has stressed the need for urgent measures to combat climate change, while assuring continued support for flood victims in Gilgit-Baltistan. Addressing a meeting on the recent monsoon rains and floods in Gilgit-Baltistan, he directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and provincial government to expedite relief efforts and restore communication links on a priority basis.
The meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, was attended by Federal Ministers, NDMA Chairman, Gilgit-Baltistan Governor, Chief Minister, and other senior officials. The meeting reviewed the damages caused by the floods and discussed the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Expressing his sorrow over the recent tragedies in Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of the country, the Prime Minister highlighted that Pakistan, despite having a negligible contribution to global climate change, is among the most affected countries. He emphasized the importance of early warnings, disaster preparedness, and the establishment of climate-resilient infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
In a bid to prevent future disasters, the Prime Minister instructed the NDMA to collaborate with the Ministry of Climate Change to set up a monitoring and early-warning center in Gilgit-Baltistan in the next few months. He also stressed the need for a comprehensive system for rescue and relief operations during emergencies and urged all federal and provincial bodies to work together for a more effective response.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed on the current flood situation, damages to infrastructure, and ongoing relief operations. The NDMA and provincial authorities highlighted the significant role of the army, local administration, and rescue workers in evacuating people and restoring damaged roads and bridges. The Prime Minister praised their efforts and assured that the reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure would be carried out with climate resilience in mind.
The Prime Minister also addressed the flood victims in Gilgit-Baltistan, distributing relief checks and assuring them of the government’s continued support. He expressed his heartfelt sympathy for those affected by the floods and said, “I will continue to visit until you are all settled in your homes. I will return by the end of August to assess the damages and lay the foundation of a new school for the affected children.”


The Prime Minister also held discussions with the Governor and Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan on ongoing development projects, security, and the future plan for rebuilding affected areas with climate-resilient infrastructure.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s visit and the ongoing relief efforts reflect the government’s commitment to mitigating the impacts of climate change and ensuring the swift recovery of flood-affected communities in Gilgit-Baltistan.
