Society Should Not Be Encouraged to Take the Law into Its Own Hands in the Name of Speedy Justice: Asma Shirazi

LAHORE (Daily Qudrat): Senior journalist Asma Shirazi has suggested to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif that society should not be encouraged to take the law into its own hands in the name of speedy justice. Speedy slaps or alleged fake encounters — justice should be based only on the law and court verdicts.

In a post on X commenting on Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s address, she wrote that society should not be encouraged to take the law into its own hands in the name of speedy justice.

Speedy slapping or alleged fake encounters.

Justice should be based only on the law and court verdicts.

As Chief Minister, you should ensure implementation of the law, not fold your hands.

Earlier, senior journalist Shehzad Iqbal had also said on Geo News’ programme Report Card that it is said that suspects were killed in police encounters, but there is a lot of evidence that these are alleged fake police encounters and extrajudicial killings.

Hina Parvez Butt tweeted that the government has provided justice, which means it is taking credit; since CCD was established, pick up Maryam Nawaz’s speeches and see — they praise her. They also know that human rights organisations are criticising them that a growing number of people have been extrajudicially killed, yet Maryam Nawaz still says we have eliminated crime.

Then the story of all police encounters is the same: the suspect’s accomplices came to free him, a police encounter took place, and the suspect was killed by his accomplices’ firing. When CCD was created, it was meant for robbers and criminal suspects. But this policy for ordinary people who commit crimes in anger? They have no influence or people who can save them.

If CCD operations are to be applied to ordinary people, then what is the use of the law and courts? Who is to improve the justice system?

Similarly, former IG Police Ihsan Ghani, speaking on anchor Shehzad Iqbal’s Geo News programme, said: why is the system not fixed? Who stops the criminal justice system from being fixed? Crimes can never be eliminated through measures like extrajudicial killings; thinking that crimes can be eliminated through extrajudicial killings can only be a delusion.

This is the thinking that extrajudicial killings will end crime, because it is a shortcut. Through such measures you try to suppress crime data, and when you suppress the data, the crime data becomes faulty.
