Maryam Nawaz Waives Down Payment on Over 125,000 E-Bikes for Students
ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has stopped the collection of down payments from students receiving more than 125,000 electric bikes under the province’s youth-focused e-bike scheme.
The chief minister also rejected proposals to charge students any additional fees apart from the monthly installment. The Punjab government will bear the interest and insurance costs associated with the electric bikes.
Monthly Installment Set at Around Rs3,000
Under the scheme, the monthly installment for students is proposed to be approximately Rs3,000. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also directed authorities to open the e-bike portal this week so that eligible students can apply.
Scheme to Be Expanded
The Punjab government has given in-principle approval to gradually expand the scope of the Chief Minister’s Electric Bike Scheme beyond students. Government employees, public departments, the general public and delivery riders will also be included in the scheme in phases.
Free Helmets and Safety Equipment
Transport Secretary Imran Sikandar Baloch briefed the chief minister on the initiative. He said students would receive a free helmet and safety rod along with each electric bike.
The e-bikes provided under the scheme will be equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are considered a modern and relatively durable battery technology.
Free Driving Training for Students
The Punjab government will also provide interested students with free two-day driving training on the chief minister’s instructions. The training is intended to help young people operate the electric bikes safely and responsibly.
Bikes to Be Delivered Within Six Weeks
Authorities have been directed to take all necessary steps to ensure that eligible students receive their electric bikes within six weeks.
The scheme is expected to provide students and other eligible beneficiaries with affordable and environmentally friendly transportation while reducing the financial burden associated with purchasing an electric bike.
