Opposition reaffirms September 27 protest plan

ISLAMABAD: A joint parliamentary party meeting of the opposition has expressed serious concern over the alleged non-implementation of Supreme Court orders and decided to pursue constitutional and legal avenues in this regard.

The meeting was held at Parliament House under the chairmanship of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai. The participants discussed the overall political situation, the health of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, implementation of Supreme Court orders, parliamentary affairs, and the opposition’s future political and public strategy.

Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Parliamentary Leader Shahid Khattak, former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, and other opposition leaders attended the meeting.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, participants expressed deep concern over Imran Khan’s health and said that no compromise would be accepted regarding his health or medical treatment. The opposition also accused the government of politicising the matter of Imran Khan’s health.

The participants maintained that the government had committed contempt of court by failing to implement the Supreme Court’s decision. They decided to approach the Supreme Court on the matter on Sunday.

The meeting also reaffirmed the PTI’s decision to hold a major protest on September 27. It was agreed to intensify the party’s public outreach campaign across Punjab and other parts of the country and to further organise political activities.

After detailed consultations on the proposed protest and long march, the opposition decided to invite all opposition parties to participate in the demonstrations.

The meeting further agreed that opposition parties would take major political and parliamentary decisions through mutual consultation, unity and coordination.

The participants also strongly endorsed the establishment of the Grand Opposition Alliance and agreed to make it more active, organised and effective.

The joint parliamentary party welcomed the inclusion of Maulana Fazlur Rehman and other opposition parties in the Grand Opposition Alliance, saying that a broader opposition alliance would strengthen and amplify the opposition’s voice in Parliament and among the public.

The meeting also held detailed discussions on the opposition alliance’s future political, parliamentary and public strategy and agreed to accelerate consultations and coordination among the allied parties.
