Pakistan Playing Mediating Role in US-Iran Issue for Peace and Stability: Security Sources

Islamabad – Security sources have stated that Pakistan is handling a highly complex issue between the United States and Iran, emphasizing that the country’s role in the matter is purely that of a mediator focused on peace and regional stability.

Speaking to journalists, senior security officials said Pakistan is engaged in diplomatic efforts over a sensitive and complicated regional situation. They added that the leadership, particularly the Field Marshal, has a single objective in this context: peace and stability.

Security sources said that had the conflict escalated, it could have led to severe consequences. They stressed that Pakistan is not interested in “headline diplomacy” but has fulfilled all responsibilities associated with mediation. According to them, the international community is gradually recognizing Pakistan’s role in de-escalation efforts.

Officials claimed that what Pakistan achieved through diplomatic wisdom and strategy was effectively a “war prevented without fighting,” attributing this success to the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

They further stated that countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates also contributed by supporting peace efforts and Pakistan’s stance for de-escalation.

Security sources noted that there are still elements attempting to destabilize the situation, and pointed to the influence of Israel in international media narratives. They also emphasized that Pakistan maintains separate and balanced relations with Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and other regional partners, and has strong brotherly ties with the UAE.

Regarding regional diplomacy, officials said Pakistan supports stability in Afghanistan and does not view Iran’s foreign engagements, including visits to India, as a matter of concern, adding that Pakistan does not approach international relations with a narrow perspective.

Security sources also highlighted counterterrorism operations, stating that 32,092 intelligence-based operations were conducted by 15 June 2026. They reported 2,170 terrorist incidents, with 64% occurring in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 34% in Balochistan. According to them, 1,861 terrorists were eliminated, while 640 security personnel and civilians were martyred. They further claimed that 862 militants were killed in Afghanistan-related operations and 999 inside Pakistan.

Officials reiterated that Pakistan’s primary issue is with terrorist networks, not local populations, and referred to ongoing concerns in Kashmir and regional security dynamics. They stated that Pakistan has always preferred dialogue as its default option for conflict resolution.

Security sources also alleged that certain groups in Azad Kashmir are attempting to disrupt public order, while the state continues to pursue a policy of engagement and dialogue. They added that those involved in unlawful activities will be dealt with through legal and constitutional means.

On internal security challenges, officials said modern warfare is increasingly technology-driven and stressed the need for adequate budgetary support. They also noted that nearly 40% of army personnel are from Kashmir.

Regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, security sources reiterated that Pakistan’s position is clear, stating that India cannot take unilateral decisions on the agreement.

They further alleged external sponsorship of banned groups and reiterated that those responsible for the May 9 incidents will be brought to justice, while dismissing claims of any meeting with former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
