AJK Action Committee Demands Constitutional Reforms, Rejects Elections Without Ending Refugee Seats

Muzaffarabad/Dadyal: The Jammu & Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee has called for urgent constitutional reforms in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), stating that transparent elections are impossible without major changes to the current system.

Following a two-day meeting held in Dadyal on March 30–31, the committee issued a declaration setting a final deadline of May 31 for the government to accept its demands. The central demand is the complete abolition of refugee seats before the next general elections, a move that has sparked fresh political debate.

The committee emphasized its support for free, fair, and impartial elections, but stressed that immediate constitutional and electoral reforms are essential to achieve this goal. It argued that unless fundamental flaws in the electoral system are addressed, election results will not reflect the true will of the people.

Following the declaration, questions have arisen regarding the timely conduct of upcoming general elections in the region. Political observers warn that failure by the government to make meaningful progress by the May 31 deadline could trigger a new phase of protests, potentially disrupting the electoral process.
