Karachi Records 19 Fatal Traffic Accidents in Five Days, Heavy Vehicles a Major Threat

Karachi has witnessed a surge in deadly traffic accidents between March 11 and March 16, claiming the lives of 19 people, according to Chhipa Foundation.
With these fatalities, the total number of people killed in traffic accidents in the city so far this year has risen to 225, including 162 men, 31 women, 23 boys, and 9 girls. Of these, 10 victims were crushed under heavy vehicles. Additionally, 2,254 people have been injured in various accidents, comprising 1,768 men, 363 women, 90 boys, and 33 girls.
Chhipa Foundation spokesperson Chaudhry Shahid highlighted that accidents involving heavy vehicles have been particularly deadly. In the first 75 days of this year, 76 people have lost their lives in crashes involving such vehicles, with 36 deaths caused by trailer collisions, 21 by water tankers, 8 by buses, 7 by Mazdas, and 4 by dumpers.
Despite repeated claims by traffic police officials that traffic laws are being enforced, the ground reality paints a different picture, with citizens falling victim to reckless driving and collisions with both heavy and unidentified vehicles.
The data underscores an urgent need for stricter enforcement and public awareness to curb the rising number of fatal traffic accidents in the city.
