Egypt Held to 1-1 Draw by Belgium in FIFA World Cup 2026 Opener

Egypt and Belgium played out a 1-1 draw in their opening Group G match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Egypt took the lead in the 20th minute through Imam Ashour, who fired a powerful shot from 20 yards after receiving an excellent pass from Mohamed Salah. Salah, playing in a central role on his 34th birthday under coach Hossam Hassan, was instrumental in creating the opening goal.
Egypt delivered a disciplined defensive performance and relied on quick counterattacks throughout the match. The team managed three shots in total, with Ashour’s strike being their only successful attempt. Omar Marmoush also came close, but his effort was deflected wide.
Belgium coach introduced striker Romelu Lukaku in the 66th minute, and the substitute made an immediate impact. Just 28 seconds after entering the field, Lukaku’s presence caused problems for the Egyptian defense.
A cross from Thomas Meunier found Lukaku between two defenders, resulting in an own goal by Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany that brought Belgium level.
The match ended 1-1, denying Egypt a winning start to its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.
