Prices of Food Items Surge in Karachi Ahead of Eid-ul-Adha

Karachi: Prices of essential food items, particularly green vegetables and kitchen staples, have sharply increased in the city ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, with consumers facing significant inflationary pressure.

According to local reports, prices of tomatoes, ginger, garlic, lemons, and green chilies have surged significantly in recent days. Tomatoes, which were previously sold at Rs 60 per kilogram, have now crossed Rs 120 per kilogram.

Lemons are being sold at Rs 500 per kilogram, while ginger and garlic prices have risen to between Rs 550 and Rs 600 per kilogram. Green chilies have also increased from Rs 60 to around Rs 100 per 250 grams.

Similarly, coriander and mint bundles are being sold at double their usual prices. Raw papaya, commonly used for tenderizing meat, is being sold at Rs 150 to Rs 200 per kilogram.

Salad items such as cucumbers, small cucumbers (kakri), and lettuce have also become expensive and less accessible. Cucumbers are priced at around Rs 150 per kilogram, kakri at Rs 200 per kilogram, while lettuce is being sold at up to Rs 100 per 250 grams.

Vegetable vendors say that transportation and supply chain costs have increased significantly, while an imbalance between demand and supply has further pushed up prices at wholesale markets.
