Captain (R) Safdar Expresses Discontent Over Being Sidelined: “I Used to Drive a Leader and Ideology’s Car, Now Many Drive Maryam’s”

Lahore: In a recent vlog, senior journalist Azaz Syed revealed that Captain (R) Safdar, during an interview with YouTube channel Hill Talks, made a subtle yet significant statement indicating his discontent over his diminishing role in Maryam Nawaz’s political journey.
When asked why he no longer drives Maryam Nawaz’s car — a symbolic reference to his previously active role in her political movement — Safdar responded, “I used to drive the car of a leader and an ideology. Now, there are many who drive Maryam’s car.” His comments hint at frustration and a sense of being sidelined.
According to Azaz Syed, the statement could be interpreted as an indirect expression of disappointment. While people close to Safdar may claim he is not upset with Maryam Nawaz, the undertone of his response suggests otherwise. It also reflects a shift in dynamics within the PML-N leadership.
Captain (R) Safdar, known for his straightforwardness and loyalty, hails from a middle-class background and married into the influential Sharif family. He has previously served jail time with Kulsoom Nawaz and stood by Nawaz Sharif during the “Vote Ko Izzat Do” (Respect the Vote) movement, even facing arrests. However, he has remained relatively out of the spotlight in recent times.
Azaz Syed also reminded viewers that during Nawaz Sharif’s tenure as Prime Minister, Safdar had openly criticized key figures like then-Principal Secretary to the PM, Fawad Hassan Fawad — an indication of his candid approach to internal politics.
Captain Safdar’s remarks suggest deeper undercurrents within PML-N and raise questions about shifting alliances and roles within the party’s inner circle.
