“Jibachi Senbei”: Japan’s Unique Biscuit Made with Insects

TOKYO: A unique Japanese delicacy known as “Jibachi Senbei” has gained international attention for its unusual ingredients—being made with dried wasps mixed into flour.
The insect-based snack is produced in Ome, Tokyo, Japan, where it is sold in local markets and specialty gourmet stores. The biscuits are made by incorporating numerous dried wasps into a rice flour mixture before being baked.
According to local reports, the idea was first developed in the mid-2010s by the “Ome Jibachi Aikokai,” a group of wasp enthusiasts, in collaboration with a local baker. Their goal was to create a distinctive regional food product using insects as a traditional-style ingredient.
Despite its unusual composition, Jibachi Senbei has attracted curious tourists from around the world who visit the area specifically to try the snack.
The product has become a well-known example of Japan’s experimental and insect-based food culture, which continues to draw both fascination and surprise internationally.
