Heatwave Alert Issued in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as Temperatures Expected to Rise Up to 47°C

Peshawar: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert for the plain areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of a significant rise in temperatures from May 8 to May 10.
According to PDMA, daytime temperatures are expected to surge between 43°C and 47°C in districts including Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, Karak, and Lakki Marwat. Meanwhile, in Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Haripur, and Kohat, temperatures are likely to remain between 39°C and 43°C.
Officials said the southern and central regions of the province will continue to experience intense heat conditions during this period.
In response, PDMA has issued advance alerts to all district administrations and directed relevant departments to establish heatstroke centers, cooling points, and mobile cooling units.
Rescue 1122 and fire services have been instructed to remain on high alert for any emergency situations, while hospitals have been directed to ensure the availability of medical staff and necessary facilities.
Authorities have also warned of possible dust storms and strong winds due to extreme heat conditions. The heatwave may increase pressure on water resources and accelerate snowmelt in upper regions.
The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, increase water intake, and take extra precautions during peak hours. Farmers have been urged to take care during crop harvesting, while livestock owners are advised to protect animals from heat stress.
Special instructions have been issued for children and elderly citizens to avoid outdoor activity between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
PDMA confirmed that its Emergency Operations Center is fully active. Citizens can report emergencies via the helpline 1700.
