Green Pakistan Initiative Transforms Desert into Modern Agricultural Hub in Bhakkar Within 60 Days

Islamabad: The vision of transforming Pakistan’s agricultural landscape under the Green Pakistan Initiative (GPI) is beginning to take shape, as a major breakthrough has been achieved in Bhakkar district of Punjab, where 1,800 acres of barren desert land has been converted into a modern agricultural and export-oriented farm within just 60 days.
The project is being hailed as a milestone not only for food security but also for boosting agricultural exports in the country.
According to Pantera Limited CEO Furqan Ali Akhtar, advanced technology was used to reclaim the barren land. Thirteen central pivot irrigation systems have been installed on the farm, while a 2.4-megawatt hybrid solar power system has been set up to meet energy requirements, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly agriculture.
Pantera Farms Chief Operating Officer Farooq Saeed stated that just four months ago, the land consisted of sand dunes rising 20 to 50 feet high. Today, around 1,300 acres of the total 1,800 acres have been brought under cultivation, where wheat and Rhodes grass are being grown, with exports of Rhodes grass already underway.
He added that the project became possible due to full support and infrastructure provided under the Green Pakistan Initiative, including the “Green Agri Mall,” which ensures transparent supply of quality seeds and fertilizers to farmers.
Farooq Saeed further revealed that, in collaboration with Chinese companies, hybrid seeds have been introduced in Pakistan for the first time, expected to significantly increase per-acre crop yield.
The Green Pakistan Initiative was launched to ensure food security, reclaim barren land, and enhance agricultural exports through modern technology, foreign investment, and corporate farming.
Experts believe the Bhakkar project will have long-term economic impacts, including foreign exchange earnings from exports, improved agricultural research, increased productivity, and thousands of new job opportunities for local communities. The use of solar energy also highlights a shift toward sustainable farming practices, reducing dependence on costly fuel and electricity.
