TB Diagnostic Kit Shortage in Pakistan as Funding Cuts Hit Health Programs

A shortage of modern tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic test kits has been reported in Pakistan, as reductions in international donor funding continue to strain health programs.
Officials from the Punjab TB Control Program have acknowledged that cuts in the health budget by international donors have created operational challenges, leading to shortages of advanced TB testing kits across the country. They noted that nearly 60% of TB patients in Pakistan are based in Punjab.
Speaking to media, the head of the Punjab TB Control Program said the current situation risks damaging existing diagnostic machinery and makes it difficult to introduce further testing innovations. He added that due to funding constraints, the program has shifted back to microscopy-based diagnosis methods.
He further explained that the reduction in funding by the Global Fund has significantly impacted operations, although the Punjab government continues to support the TB control initiative to maintain basic services.
Health experts warn that shortages in modern diagnostic tools could delay detection and treatment of TB cases, potentially affecting disease control efforts nationwide.
