Encroachments Along Rivers Are Legacy of Past Governments, Says Maryam Aurangzeb

Lahore: Punjab’s Senior Minister **Maryam Aurangzeb** has said that illegal settlements along riverbanks are the responsibility of past governments, while the current administration has imposed a complete ban on tree cutting and initiated mapping of riverbeds.

Speaking to the media, Aurangzeb revealed that allocations for the construction of **dams in Punjab have been made in the Asian Development Bank (ADB)**, and multiple flood-prevention projects are already underway.

She noted that Punjab is facing the **worst flood in its history**, with abnormal water levels in the **Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab** rivers. At **Head Ravi**, water flow has reached **220,000 cusecs**, while millions of cusecs are passing through **Khanqah, Qadirabad, Rewas Bridge, Trimmu, and Balloki**, with water levels rising continuously at Trimmu and Rewas Bridge.

According to Aurangzeb, over **20 million people** have been affected by the floods. So far, **750,000 residents** have been evacuated, **115,000 rescued by boats**, and **500,000 livestock** moved to safer areas. The government has set up **400 veterinary camps**, while schools have been converted into **temporary relief shelters**.

She emphasized that **Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz** is personally monitoring the **historic rescue operation**, which has already identified **2,207 villages** affected, with another **1,000 villages at risk**.

Aurangzeb also disclosed that **India released water by opening spillways without prior notice**, adding that the **Foreign Office and NDMA** are collecting data on the matter. She demanded an inquiry into the role of **RUDA and private housing schemes** in worsening the situation.

The minister highlighted that flood-hit regions are being monitored with **drones and thermal cameras**, while **mobile clinics and medical camps** are providing health services. Relief supplies, including food, drinking water, and medicines, are being ensured, while police have been placed on alert to prevent looting.

She confirmed that **38 people have lost their lives** so far due to roof collapses, electrocution, and other flood-related incidents.

Aurangzeb reiterated that the government’s priority is to **protect lives and minimize damage**, stressing that no political pressure or trolling will divert their focus from relief operations.
