Pakistan Calls for Immediate Ceasefire and Intensified Diplomacy in Eastern DR Congo

New York: Pakistan has called for an immediate ceasefire and accelerated diplomatic efforts to address the worsening situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Speaking at the , Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence, escalating humanitarian crisis, and rising number of displaced people in the region. He emphasized that restoring peace has become an urgent necessity.

He stressed the need for full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2773, stating that a sustainable ceasefire is essential for long-term stability in the region.

Pakistan also welcomed ongoing international diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalation, including mediation efforts by the African Union, the Washington Process, and the Doha Framework. He noted that these efforts, alongside UN initiatives, could help build confidence and pave the way for a political solution.

Reaffirming support for the MONUSCO, Pakistan highlighted its critical role in implementing a ceasefire under suitable conditions.

Ambassador Ahmad further pointed out that illegal mining and smuggling of natural resources in eastern Congo are among the key drivers of instability. He called for enhanced regional cooperation, transparent supply chains, and effective strategies to ensure that these resources benefit the local population.

He added that despite increased diplomatic engagement, the lack of significant improvement on the ground reflects the complexity of the crisis.

In conclusion, Pakistan reiterated its strong support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, urging the international community to seize the opportunity for coordinated and effective action to achieve lasting peace in the region.
