Iran Warns Gulf Ports ‘Will Be Safe for All or None’ Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

TEHRAN: Iran’s armed forces have issued a strong warning that ports in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman will either remain open and secure for all countries or for none, in response to threats against its maritime security.

According to Iranian state media Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the joint command of Iran’s armed forces stated that safeguarding the country’s sovereignty over its maritime boundaries is a “legal and natural right.”

The statement emphasized that Iran will continue to ensure security in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, but warned that vessels linked to hostile entities would not be allowed to pass through the waterway. Other ships would be permitted transit in accordance with Iranian regulations.

Iranian forces further said that in light of ongoing threats, a strict and permanent system of control over the Strait of Hormuz would be enforced, even after any potential conflict ends.

The statement also criticized the United States, calling any restrictions on navigation in international waters illegal and equivalent to piracy.

Iran warned that if its ports or maritime security are threatened, no port in the region would remain safe. The armed forces reiterated their stance that protecting sea routes in the region is Iran’s responsibility and that any aggressive move would be met with a firm and decisive response.

The warning comes after Donald Trump threatened military action and announced a potential blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following a lack of progress in negotiations with Iran.
