Barrick Gold Extends Review Period of Reko Diq Project by 12 Months; Development Pace Slowed Due to Security Concerns

Quetta: Barrick Gold has announced a 12-month extension to the ongoing review period of the Reko Diq project, citing security concerns, while expressing continued confidence in the project’s long-term potential. Development activities will proceed at a slower pace during this period but will remain under active oversight.
According to the company’s statement, following the preliminary review results announced on February 5, 2026, and in light of heightened security challenges in Pakistan and the Middle East, the review process will be extended until July next year. This extension is aimed at thoroughly assessing the project’s potential impacts and strategic considerations.
The statement clarified that development work will not be completely halted but will continue at a reduced speed, ensuring that the project remains under strict administrative supervision. The extension and slower development pace may affect previously set budgets and timelines, with further details to be shared with the market in due course.
The Reko Diq project is among Pakistan’s most significant mineral resource initiatives, with Barrick Gold as a key stakeholder, attracting close attention both nationally and internationally.
