IMF Objects to Parliamentary Asset Disclosure Amendment, Urges Reversal

Islamabad** — The **International Monetary Fund (IMF)** has raised objections to a legal amendment that would allow members of Pakistan’s parliament to keep their assets secret and has asked for it to be withdrawn.
Sources report that the Secretary of the **Election Commission of Pakistan** informed the IMF that the commission will not compromise on transparency under any circumstances.
The **Law Division** also told the IMF that the government has not yet endorsed the amendments, which were introduced as private legislation by members of the **Pakistan Peoples Party** in the National Assembly.
According to sources, the IMF has requested the Law Division to adopt a clear stance on the matter. The National Assembly approved the amendment to the **Elections Act 2017** to limit the public disclosure of lawmakers’ assets and liabilities, with support mainly from members of the **Pakistan Muslim League-N**.
However, the amendment has not become law as the **Senate of Pakistan** has not voted on the bill. The IMF has inquired about the legal status of these amendments, highlighting concerns over transparency in governance.
