Untrained Security Guards Pose Growing Threat to Public Safety in Karachi

The presence of untrained private security guards in Karachi has become a serious concern, with recent incidents raising alarming questions about the standards and oversight of private security companies operating in the city.
The issue came into sharp focus in North Nazimabad, where a young man, Waleed, was shot dead by a security guard in a recent firing incident. The tragedy has prompted authorities to take action against companies failing to meet required safety and training standards.
### Police Move to Blacklist Company
According to DIG West Irfan Baloch, a letter is being prepared to blacklist the security company whose guard was involved in the killing. He stated that he is also writing to the Sindh Home Secretary, the Inspector General of Police Sindh, and the Karachi Police Chief, urging a comprehensive review of all private security companies operating in the city.
Baloch revealed that three firing incidents involving security guards have occurred in District West alone, resulting in three fatalities.
### Lack of Training and Oversight
Officials say many private security companies are failing to meet minimum training standards. A shortage of properly trained personnel, inadequate weapons handling skills, and lack of emergency response and crowd-control training are among the key concerns.
Despite being licensed, several companies reportedly do not fully comply with regulations set by Sindh Police or the Sindh Home Department. In many cases, guards receive informal “in-house” training instead of structured instruction at certified training centers.
Authorities warn that improper handling of weapons by untrained guards has led to a rise in accidental firing incidents.
### Public Safety at Risk
Experts caution that in situations involving theft, robbery, or terrorism, inadequately trained guards often fail to respond effectively. Guards deployed at schools, banks, shopping malls, and hospitals may unintentionally put public safety at risk rather than enhance it.
Concerns have also been raised about weak monitoring mechanisms. Relevant authorities reportedly do not regularly verify training records or licenses of private security companies, nor do they consistently take strict action against guards carrying illegal weapons.
### Calls for Urgent Reforms
Security experts emphasize the urgent need for reforms, including:
* Mandatory professional training and psychological evaluation for all guards
* Comprehensive background verification
* Establishment of minimum training standards at the government level
* Stronger coordination among regulatory authorities
* Mandatory display of training certificates and license numbers
* Regular audits and review systems for private security firms
Analysts warn that arming untrained individuals in the name of security can create explosive situations. They stress that untrained security personnel are not only a danger to the public but also to themselves, underscoring the need for immediate and effective regulatory action.
