Punjab Education Minister Says Rs15,000-Paid Teacher Outperforms Teacher Earning Rs100,000

LAHORE: Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has sparked a fresh debate over teachers’ salaries and performance, stating that educational outcomes depend more on dedication and hard work than on the size of a teacher’s paycheck.

Addressing a ceremony, the minister responded to criticism regarding the employment of teachers on comparatively low salaries, particularly in private and other low-cost educational institutions.

Rana Sikandar Hayat said critics often object by pointing out that some teachers are being hired for salaries as low as Rs15,000 per month. However, he argued that such criticism ignores actual performance results.

“I only want to tell them that a teacher earning Rs15,000 delivers better results than your teacher earning Rs100,000,” the minister said.

He maintained that the quality of teaching and student performance should be measured by outcomes rather than salary levels. According to him, teachers working for lower pay are often producing stronger academic results through commitment and hard work.

The minister’s remarks highlighted two key points: first, that teachers receiving lower salaries should not have their abilities questioned solely because of their pay scale; and second, that highly paid teachers should reflect on their performance if those earning significantly less are achieving better educational results.

His comments have reignited discussion on the relationship between teacher compensation, accountability, and student achievement in Punjab’s education sector.
