Debate Erupts Over Punjab Government’s Alleged Purchase of Gulfstream G500 Jet

A fresh political and public debate has erupted following reports that the Government of Punjab has acquired an expensive and luxurious Gulfstream G500 aircraft.

The matter came to light after an advertisement was issued seeking an experienced pilot specifically qualified to operate a Gulfstream G500. The 2019-manufactured jet is typically used by heads of state and major corporate executives worldwide, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs11 billion.

The controversy intensified when the aircraft was recently spotted flying between Lahore and Sialkot, reportedly using the call sign “Punjab 2,” which is commonly associated with the presence of the chief minister.

Former federal finance minister Miftah Ismail and former governor of Sindh Muhammad Zubair strongly criticized the alleged purchase.

In a post on X, Miftah Ismail wrote that while the federal government has increased petrol prices by Rs5 per litre and diesel by Rs7.32 per litre, ordinary citizens are being asked to make sacrifices, whereas privileged VIPs in Punjab are fastening their seat belts in luxury private jets.

Muhammad Zubair also questioned the decision, stating that the jet — reportedly worth over Rs10 billion — had allegedly been acquired for use by the chief minister and party elites. He asked whether a nation struggling with economic hardship, where a significant portion of the population lives below the poverty line and unemployment remains high, can afford such extravagance.

Following the criticism, Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari addressed a press conference, clarifying that the aircraft was purchased for the provincial government’s airline project, “Air Punjab.” She said the government is expanding its fleet with a mix of purchased and leased aircraft, and the jet is part of that broader plan.

Meanwhile, Adviser to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on Finance Muzammil Aslam also reacted to the reports, drawing a comparison by saying that while the national carrier was privatized for around Rs10 billion, Punjab had allegedly bought a single aircraft for Rs11 billion. He sarcastically remarked that a 19-seat jet for a population of 130 million reflects “governance,” adding that operational costs such as maintenance, fuel, and crew would further increase the burden.
