Pakistani Freelancers Earn Over $55 Million in First Half of Current Fiscal Year, Says State Bank

Karachi: Pakistani freelancers earned more than $55 million in foreign exchange during the first half of fiscal year 2025–26, reflecting the strength of the country’s growing digital economy and the rising global demand for Pakistan’s skilled digital workforce, the State Bank of Pakistan reported.

According to the State Bank’s data, freelancers generated $55.7 million from computer and information-related services between July and December 2025, up from $35.2 million during the same period last fiscal year—a significant 58 percent increase.

The report highlighted that the surge in freelancing income demonstrates Pakistan’s global competitiveness in fields such as software development, digital marketing, graphic designing, content creation, and e-commerce.

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shiza Fatima Khawaja said the government is taking multiple measures to support freelancers and enhance their contribution to the economy. These initiatives include improving digital infrastructure, providing affordable internet, facilitating digital payments, and preparing a skilled workforce aligned with market demands.

Ibrahim Amin, chairman of the Pakistan Freelancers Association, said that freelancers have surpassed many export sectors by earning $55 million in just six months, and the total income is expected to exceed $100 million by the end of the fiscal year.

He added that following the association’s recommendations since 2018, the government and State Bank have introduced reforms enabling freelancers to legally bring income into the country, open foreign currency accounts, and keep 50 percent of their earnings in banks. Amin also noted that registered freelancers currently pay only a minimal tax of 0.25 percent.
