Honda to Discontinue Iconic Civic Type R in Europe by 2026, Marking the End of an Era

Tokyo, Japan:Honda has officially announced that it will discontinue its legendary high-performance hatchback, the *Civic Type R*, by 2026. This marks the end of an impressive 28-year history for the vehicle, which has been a mainstay in the world of performance cars. The decision comes shortly after Ford announced the discontinuation of its *Focus ST*, raising further questions about the future of high-performance cars in the European market.
To bid farewell to the *Civic Type R*, Honda has introduced the *Ultimate Edition*, which will be limited to just 40 units across Europe. Each of these cars will feature a striking “Championship White” color with red graphics stretching across the doors, reminiscent of the iconic red Honda badge. Carbon fiber accents will be prominent on various parts of the car, including the rear spoiler, interior trims, and even the cup holders and key ring.
Additionally, every buyer will receive a special gift box, containing a unique “emblem” numbered from 1 to 40, emphasizing the exclusivity of the *Ultimate Edition*. While the car will have some cosmetic updates, it won’t include significant performance upgrades compared to the previous FK8 Limited Edition.
**Honda Pays Tribute to the Civic Type R Legacy**
Honda’s Head of Strategy and Product in Europe, Hannah Swift, remarked on this occasion, saying, “The *Ultimate Edition* is a tribute to the past 28 years of performance heritage. It symbolizes Honda’s unwavering passion for driving, regardless of the changing industry standards and regulations.”
**Regulatory Challenges and Uncertainty Ahead**
A major factor behind the *Civic Type R*’s discontinuation is the introduction of the European Union’s new *GSR2 safety regulations*, which require all new vehicles to include additional active safety features. The current *Civic Type R* does not meet these new standards, and Honda has yet to announce any successor model or a return with updated features.
There is speculation that the entire *Type R* series may be discontinued alongside the upcoming FL5 generation, but similar pauses in *Civic Type R* production have occurred in the past, followed by comebacks with improved models. Whether this decision is temporary or permanent remains unclear, and the full details are yet to be revealed.
**Availability and Pricing**
In the UK, only 10 units of the *Ultimate Edition* will be available, reflecting the high demand for performance cars in the market. These exclusive models will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, with an expected starting price of £60,000 (approximately 2 crore Pakistani Rupees).
The discontinuation of the *Civic Type R* is not just the end of a specific model, but also signals the conclusion of an era for high-performance hatchbacks in Europe. Honda’s decision highlights the evolving trends in the European car market and the impact of stricter regulations on automotive manufacturers.
