Finance Minister Assures IMF of Continued Economic Reforms, Invites MD Kristalina Georgieva to Pakistan

Pakistan’s Finance Minister, Muhammad Aurangzeb, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue economic reforms during a high-level meeting with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Washington. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings.
During the discussion, Aurangzeb expressed gratitude for the recent staff-level agreement between Pakistan and the IMF. He also extended an invitation on behalf of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, inviting Georgieva to visit Pakistan.
The Finance Minister also met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, Robert Kaproth, where he briefed him on Pakistan’s current economic situation and the ongoing reforms in key sectors, including revenue generation, privatization, and pensions.
In a separate engagement, Aurangzeb met with Hela Cheikhrouhou, Regional Vice President of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and her team. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation in private sector reforms, energy, sustainable municipal finance, and employment generation.
The progress on diversified payment rights was also reviewed during the discussions.
Aurangzeb commended IFC’s significant role in supporting the $2.5 billion financing package for the Reko Diq copper and gold mining project in Balochistan. He emphasized that the local communities must directly benefit from the project’s development and revenue.
These meetings reflect Pakistan’s active engagement with international financial institutions and underscore its intent to foster stability, growth, and inclusive development through strategic reforms and global partnerships.
