PPP’s Sherry Rehman Criticizes New NEPRA Policy, Says Solar Investors Being Penalized

Islamabad: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman has criticized the new National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) policy, calling it contrary to Pakistan’s environmental commitments and harmful to solar energy investors.

In a statement, Sherry Rehman said the new regulations effectively punish citizens who have invested in clean and affordable electricity. “Those who trusted NEPRA and invested in solarization are now facing losses,” she remarked.

She added that the policy sends a negative message to rooftop solar users and other investors, urging the government either to privatize the electricity distribution system or hand it over to the provinces.

Under the new regulations, NEPRA has reduced the rates for electricity sold to the national grid. While existing solar users will continue to sell power at Rs25.32 per unit, new solar users will face a steep reduction of Rs17.19 per unit, receiving just Rs8.13 per unit, which is less than one-third of the previous rate.

Sherry Rehman warned that these measures could discourage further investment in renewable energy and undermine Pakistan’s goals for sustainable power generation.
